My story

Hi! I’m Jake - a software engineer and current teaching fellow at Fullstack Academy of Code. One of the things I love most about software is its ability to drastically improve people’s lives, which is why I strive to make the applications I create impactful and meaningful to the people who use them.

Before becoming a software engineer, I worked as the Assistant to the Executive Director/Board Liaison at the Committee to Protect Journalists, a human rights organization dedicated to press freedom around the world. Always a person drawn to logical ways of thinking, I began teaching myself to code in my free time, learning the power of languages like Python and Javascript. After two and a half years spent with amazing colleagues, I left my job and enrolled at Fullstack Academy, a 3-month immersive bootcamp where I learned the ins and outs of some of the most important Javascript technologies. After a successful time as a student, I was selected to Fullstack’s 3-month teaching fellowship for the next cohort of students.

Skills

Here are some of the technologies I have been working with recently:

  • Front-end JavaScript: React, Redux, Bootstrap, HTML5, CSS3
  • Back-end JavaScript: Node.js, Sequelize, Express
  • Python: Pandas, MatPlotLib, Numpy, SciKitLearn
  • Other (DevOps, Tools, etc.): Git, Github, Webpack, Bootstrap, PostgreSQL, SQL, TDD (Mocha, Jasmine, Chai), OAuth, Heroku, Socket.IO, VS Code
